Why use our BMP to JPG converter?
BMP files are uncompressed raster images that can be absurdly large β a simple screenshot saved as BMP might be 5-10 MB, compared to a few hundred kilobytes as a JPG. While BMP was once a common format on Windows systems, it's now largely obsolete for everyday use. If you've received a BMP from legacy software, an older scanner, or a specialized application, our converter transforms it into a compact JPG that you can easily email, upload, or embed in documents.
The tool is free, runs on any device, and requires no downloads or signups. After converting your BMP to JPG, you might want to compress it further or resize it to match specific requirements. Working with other older formats? Our TIFF to JPG converter handles those high-quality image files, and our general image converter supports a wide range of formats.
What is BMP?
BMP (Bitmap) is one of the oldest image file formats, originally developed by Microsoft for Windows. BMP files store pixel data with little to no compression, which means they preserve exact color information for every single pixel but result in very large file sizes. A 1920x1080 BMP image in 24-bit color takes up nearly 6 MB, while the same image as a JPG might be under 500 KB. BMPs were common in early Windows applications and are still generated by some legacy software, industrial equipment, and embedded systems, but they've been largely replaced by more efficient formats for general use.
